Schools – Public
and Private/Meet Teachers and Students
Concordia’s multi-million dollar
campus expansion, WCC’s
state-of-the-art Health Sciences building,
and we feature and interview
some great teachers and students from our public and private schools
Selma has Two Public School Districts – Selma City Schools
and Dallas County School District’s High School is featured
in this section.
There are Four Private Schools – Morgan
Academy – by far our largest and academic and sports power
in our state at 500 students, Meadowview Christian is a pre-K-12
with 280 students, Ellwood Christian Academy has an enrollment
of 160 (also K-12), and very small Cathedral
Academy offers K-12
and has just 65 students.
Three Colleges with more than 2,500 students
and 200 professors/educators contribute greatly to the education,
economic, and Arts culture here in Selma: Wallace
Community College is an impressive and growing campus with nursing and health technology
programs, Selma University has the claim of being the oldest historically
black college in America, and in 2010 Concordia University’s
37 acre expansion drew statewide attention – Concordia was
once Alabama Lutheran College and is now part of an impressive
10 campus national system.
Our State Universities: The state of
Alabama has an impressive state university system that rivals many
states in the country – with the cost of college tuition
today, even this factor should be considered by jobseekers with
families. Alabama has 2 medical schools (University of Alabama,
and the University of South Alabama) and three
outstanding doctoral research universities: University of Alabama (UA), University of
Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and U Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).

A perennial power and the top college preparatory academy in Alabama,
Morgan Academy’s standard of excellence is nothing short
of remarkable. As of 2009, in the 70-school Alabama Independent
School Association, which stretches from Mobile to Birmingham,
Morgan Academy has ranked #1 academically
14 of the last 17 years,
and 2nd in the others. In athletics, a second trophy room is under
construction to accommodate the overflow of state championship
trophies – 44 state championships since 1985 with 31 Runner-Up
finishes.
All 61 seniors will attend college next year, and amassed
a total of $1.7 million in college scholarships. 7 seniors scored
30 or higher on the ACT, while 3 received recognition as National
Merit Scholars. Morgan Academy is K-12, with 500 students on a
29-acre campus on the western side of Selma, and accredited by
SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). Its Board
of Directors is currently considering IB and AP courses.

Special Notes:
DCHS was a “Beta Test Site” for “Access
Distance Learning” in the state of Alabama, which pools the
resources of public schools throughout the state, enabling, among
other things, for special requests, like taking Japanese as a foreign
language, or advanced math classes, by remote, in which students
from multiple schools participate – any school in this program
can offer the very best and most advanced classes in the state
education system! Meet Amy Reeves, IVC Teacher at DCHS, and learn
more
Nine
AP classes are administered at DCHS. Advanced Learning curriculum
offers eight courses from Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Web Design and

Dr. James Mitchell has grown WCCS into
a community college that is a model for Alabama –
above
he is speaking at a breakfast hosting Barack Obama
The $5.5 million Health Building (above) was completed in 2007
on campus. The 30,000 SF 2-story building houses nursing classrooms,
a lab, and faculty offices, in support of LPN, and the RN program.
The community college offers a 4-semester RN program and 98% of
clinical experience is at Vaughan RMC in the areas of ER, Med/Surg,
Surgery, and O/B.
- WCCS produce 30-35 nurses per year, and
last year graduates had a 100% pass rate on their NAS certification
boards.
- WCCS nursing programs (LPN & ADN) are accredited
by the Alabama State Board of Nursing, and the ADN program is
accredited by the National League of Nursing (NLN).
New Administration Building on campus
WCCS
offers (16) technical programs - Auto Body Repair, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration,
Auto Mechanics, Cosmetology, Drafting & Design Technology,
Electrical Technology, Office Administration (Clerk Typist), Office
Administration (Accounting), Information Processing (Secretarial),
Information Technology, Medical Transcription, Practical Nursing,
Nursing Assistant, Masonry/Building Trades, Machine Tool Technology & Welding.
These “brick and mortar” programs are critically important,
as graduates from these programs are the support professionals
for business.
One of the oldest historically black colleges in America, Selma
University is today a primarily Christian Bible college, but it
also offers degree programs in Business Administration as well
as Biology. Masters degrees are offered in Theology
Concordia College has big plans – Dr.
Ramsey attended college here and has an incredible
perspective
on how Selma has grown, and has a positive outlook on our future

Alabama’s State Colleges & Universities:
University
flagships are the University of Alabama, with law and medical schools,
and Auburn University, which is known for its excellent engineering
and science schools. Alabama also boasts nationally recognized
private colleges, such as Birmingham-Southern and Samford University,
both in Birmingham, as well as Tuskeegee University and Stillman
College.
If you aren’t a college football fan, you will become one!
Alabama and Auburn are colleges in the mighty Southeastern
Conference,
long regarded as the elite conference in the NCAA. Tuscaloosa,
home to The University of Alabama “Crimson Tide,” is
just 80 miles from Selma – leave after breakfast and you’ll
have plenty of time to tailgate before the next home game! Auburn
is just under 100 miles!
